5 Great Things About Marriage

Posted in Marriage Monday with 12 comments

In a world of negativity and confusion about marriage, I decided that today needed a little touch of marital beauty. Here are five amazing things about a healthy, functioning marriage. There are many more, but today I will limit it to these. Please feel free to comment and add more!

  1. Seeing Christ on earth. Ephesians tells us that marriage represents Christ and the church, and with our spouse we get a little taste of the outstanding love God has for us.
  2. Honesty. There’s no reason to hold back, or hide who you are.  You can wear your Sunday best or your old college shirt and they love you just the same. You can tell them about what you are really feeling and know that they will never leave.
  3. Someone to touch. In a sexual way, of course, but also just to feel the love of someone else in a simple hug, kiss, or touch on the hand.
  4. Someone to laugh at, and someone to laugh at you. In kindness of course, but admit it… it keeps you humble.
  5. There is always someone to walk through life with. Someone who has committed their life to you, and you to them, and who will walk by your side in the good in the bad.

    These are SO true. :)

One of my favorite things about marriage is never having to go to bed or wake up alone. I’m blessed in that our schedule allows for this. I LOVE sleeping with my husband!!

Great addition, Jaimie! I agree, that was an especially precious gift in the first year of marriage that I often take for granted today. Thanks for commenting!

I love having someone who will helps sharpen me. “As iron sharpens iron.” I get tired of the old me and the same old mistakes I make. I appreciate having someone who watches out for and pushes the best out of me. I love the way Gary Thomas puts it “what if marriage was meant to make you holy.” I know for me, my marriage has definitely helped me to become a better me.

LOVE your list! And anything I’d add is already encompassed in your five – but here are two little details:

    - Sharing ideas. There’s nothing better than learning/reading something and being able to share it with your spouse, talk it over and then be able to apply it to your life together. Robert and I are constantly sharing stuff we’re learning! (That’s covered under #5)

    - Someone to steady you. Whether being able to hold onto your spouse’s arm or hand when you’re a little physically shaky, or if you’re emotionally unstable and need an attitude check – a healthy marriage is the best stabilizer.

Thank you for sharing – wonderful!

Thanks for this great reminder, Erin!

I would add “someone to share your faith journey with.” Having my wife encourage me in the Lord is such a key part of my spiritual walk.
